I’ve been playing games for as long as I can remember, and now I’m finally looking into hosting tournaments myself. However, I can tell this won’t be happening for me… Yet.
Like everything else on ChannlerG, I’m learning in real-time and sharing my process as I go, so if you’re looking for some ultra-professional guide from an esports veteran, this ain’t it. But if you want a raw, honest look at what it actually takes to set up tournaments, this is for you.
Some links may be affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. These are tools and platforms I trust, or wish I’d known about sooner.
Step 1: Picking the Right Platform (Or Building Your Own?)
Right now, I’m exploring whether to use a third-party platform like Battlefy, Toornament, or Challonge, or to eventually build something directly into my site. If you’re thinking about hosting tournaments, here’s what I’m considering:
- Battlefy, Toornament, or Challonge: These platforms handle registration, brackets, leaderboards, and match tracking, which makes tournament management easier. Biggest Pro? Less work for me. Biggest Con? Less control over branding, monetization, and the player experience.
- Hosting Everything on My Own Site: This would allow me to control everything, from registration to rankings to rewards. But let’s be real, it’s a huge commitment, and I’m not a coder (yet).
For now, I’m leaning toward using Battlefy or something similar, while keeping control of marketing, community engagement, and payouts through my own website.

Step 2: Choosing the Games & Tournament Format
This is where things get fun, but also where I’m still figuring things out.
I know for sure I want to start with Call of Duty or Battlefield 6 tournaments, since that’s what people are playing the most right now. But I also want to explore EA Sports FC (FIFA), Fortnite, and maybe even some other games down the road.
As for tournament format, I’m considering:
- Single Elimination: Fast, simple, and easy to run. One loss and you’re out.
- Double Elimination: A little more forgiving: lose once, but fight your way back.
- Ranked Play Events: Bring your squad, climb the leaderboards, and earn rewards for consistency.
I still don’t know which game is my pick for launch, and Steelseries Headsets are essential for clear comms. Need more recommendations on Streaming Gear You Need (skip the overhyped stuff).
Step 3: Monetization… Can You Actually Make Money from Tournaments?
This is the big question. A lot of people assume only the biggest esports organizations can profit from tournaments, but I don’t buy that. There are plenty of ways to make tournaments profitable, even as a small brand.
- Sponsorships & Brand Deals: Companies pay to put their name on a tournament or stream.
- Entry Fees & Prize Pools: Free tournaments at first, then possibly small entry fees for higher-stakes events.
- Exclusive Merch or VIP Access: Custom merch, behind-the-scenes content, coaching sessions, etc.
- Affiliate Marketing & Ads: Using the site & streams to recommend gaming gear & services.
I’m learning slow, so if this ever happens, it’ll be done right. (for now, we still have to get this website looking better).

Step 4: Building a Community Around the Tournaments
Here’s the reality: without a solid community, tournaments don’t work. If no one cares, no one signs up. Here’s Why Building A Community Beats Going Viral.
That’s why I’m focusing on:
- Social Media Marketing (Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc.)
- This Website (Blog updates, tournament pages, results)
- Influencer & Content Creator Partnerships (To bring in more players)
I also want to implement leaderboards & ranking systems for players who consistently show up and compete. Maybe even some custom rewards for the most active participants.
Step 5: Running the Tournaments Smoothly (Without Losing My Mind)
Let’s be real, this could go horribly wrong if I don’t plan. That means handling disputes, enforcing rules, and making sure everything runs fairly.
Some things I need to figure out ASAP:
- Who’s running the matches? Do I need to host private lobbies or let players organize their own games?
- Rules & Moderation: How do I handle cheaters, no-shows, or disputes?
- Live Streaming & Commentary: Do I want to broadcast the matches & provide commentary?
I’ll probably bring in some tournament admins/moderators before launching any paid events. If you’ve got experience in this, hit me up because I will 100% need help.
For smooth broadcasts, I’ll rely on Elgato capture cards and Blue Yeti for commentary.

Final Thoughts: What’s Next?
Right now, I’m in full research & planning mode, but I’m moving fast.

This is just the beginning. Let’s build something legit together.
