Sometimes a game people quietly loved refuses to disappear.
That’s exactly what’s happening right now with Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, which is suddenly seeing a noticeable surge in players on Steam this weekend. A deep discount, a new roadmap outlining the game’s future, and fresh in-game events have combined to create what feels like a mini-renaissance for Ubisoft’s seven-year-old loot shooter.
For longtime fans (myself included), it’s actually pretty great to see the streets of Washington D.C. busy again.
A $3 Entry Point Brings Everyone Back
The easiest explanation for the resurgence is the current sale. The game recently dropped to around $3 on Steam, which immediately lowers the barrier for both new players and people who might have bounced off the game years ago.
That kind of price almost always sparks curiosity.
For returning players, reinstalling suddenly feels like an easy decision. For new players, it’s a chance to jump into a massive AAA looter-shooter for basically pocket change. According to tracking sites like SteamDB, the game’s concurrent player count has jumped roughly 400% higher than normal, reaching around 20,000 players on Steam at once this weekend. That doesn’t even include players on Ubisoft Connect or consoles.
When that many people come back at the same time, the game immediately starts feeling alive again.

Ubisoft Is Showing the Game Isn’t Done Yet
The timing of the resurgence also lines up with Ubisoft outlining the next phase of content for the game.
Even after seven years, the studio is still planning updates, including:
-
PvP balancing improvements
-
New classified assignments
-
A new incursion mission
-
Crossplay across PC and consoles
-
Additional seasonal updates
One of the biggest upcoming pieces of content is a new DLC set in Central Park, which should expand the game’s world even further.
Ubisoft is also testing a new extraction-style experience called “Survivors,” which is expected to lean heavily into the high-tension survival gameplay that originally made the Dark Zone such a big deal for the series.
And yes, the future of the franchise is still moving forward. Ubisoft has already confirmed work on Tom Clancy’s The Division 3, meaning the series isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The Division Universe Is Still Expanding
While players revisit the main game, Ubisoft is also preparing to expand the universe onto mobile with The Division Resurgence, which is scheduled to launch soon.
That project aims to bring a Division-style experience to smartphones, essentially adapting the looter-shooter formula for mobile players.
Whether that takes off or not, the current surge proves something interesting: people are still interested in this franchise.
And if this weekend’s player spike is any indication, there are still plenty of agents ready to return to the fight.
