Keyboard & Mouse vs. Controller: Does It Really Matter?

(Or are we all just making excuses for being bad?)

The Great Debate Nobody Asked For
If you’ve spent any time in competitive gaming, you’ve heard the never-ending debate:
Keyboard & Mouse (KBM) vs. Controller.
Some people act like using a controller is the equivalent of showing up to a Formula 1 race in a tricycle, while others swear aim assist makes controllers basically auto-aiming cheat codes.

So, who’s right? And more importantly, does it actually matter? (Being passionate about your tools is one of the many reasons Why Gamers Make Great Entrepreneurs)

The Argument for KBM: “Precision, Speed, and the Holy Wrist Flick”

Real gamer setup: a SteelSeries keyboard decked out with stickers and paired with a pink controller. Which side are you on?

KBM die-hards will tell you:

  • Faster response times
  • Better accuracy with a mouse (in theory)
  • More keybinding options for faster actions

It all sounds great, but let’s be real, if you’re bad at aiming, a mouse isn’t going to save you. You’ll just be missing your shots with more “precision.”

For those chasing ‘precision,’ check out the ASUS ROG or the Logitech G915 keyboard. Just don’t blame them if you still miss. (these links help pay for my morning coffee: find out How You Can Start Making Money From Gaming)

The Argument for Controller: “Aim Assist Is Basically Legal Cheating”

Controller players have their own set of advantages:

  • Aim assist. (If you think it’s OP, just remember it’s compensating for the fact that our thumbs are doing all the aiming.)
  • Comfort. You’re sitting back, relaxed, and not hunched over a desk.
  • No accidental misclicks. Ever thrown a grenade at yourself because your hand twitched? No? Then you haven’t played on KBM.

If you’re Team Controller, the XBox Elite Series 2 or PlayVital Samurai Grips will have your thumbs working overtime (but comfortably).

My Experience: Why I Stick to a Controller

Let’s be clear, I have tried aiming with a mouse.
Not because I wanted to, but because Call of Duty glitches on me, locks my controller out, and forces me to use KBM in a ranked match from time to time.

They’re the worst games of my life. I look like I’ve straight-up relapsed. My team loses SR, and I lose a piece of my soul.
So yeah… I’m sticking with a controller.

The Truth: It’s All About What You’re Used To

  • If you grew up on controllers, you’re probably going to feel more natural using one.
  • If you’ve been on PC since you were 10, a controller is going to feel like trying to write with your non-dominant hand.

That’s it. That’s the whole debate. (Life is about balance: check out how I’m Balancing Gaming, Business & Family)

Final Thoughts:

No matter what we find, I’m still using a controller.
The only thing I need my keyboard for is typing “gg” after a match.
If you use KBM, don’t shoot me.
If you use a Controller, don’t shoot me.

End of debate.
